COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The first ever indoor hailstorm dropped by South Carolina Wednesday.

The frozen ball of ice can ruin your home's roof and other outdoor property.

Researchers at the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety are trying to help out your first line of defense.

The first indoor hailstorm took place at the 21,000 square foot site in Richburg where 9,200 man-made hailstones were shot at up to 75 mph towards a house. The hailstones measured anywhere from 1.0", 1.5", and 2.0" in diameter.

It was all in the name of research.

A car, standard three tab shingles, impact-resistant architectural shingles, and a standing seam metal roof were the victims of the test.

Research Engineer Tanya Brown said "As we gather more data and learn more with these kind of tests, we want to work with the manufacturers and make sure that the products that are out there are best for people that live in hail prone areas."
