IRMO, S.C. (WACH) - Whether a catastrophic hurricane or a small summer thunderstorm damages your home, State Farm agent Gary Williamson says your homeowner's insurance should cover it.

"If you have a regular homeowner policy, where you got windstorm, you're covered, whether it's a declared tornado, or a declared hurricane, if it's windstorm damage it's going to be covered."

Your possessions would also be covered under homeowner's or renter's policy should they be destroyed in a storm; but very few insurance agencies will sell you a policy once a storm is bearing down on the region.

"Flood is not covered under a regular homeowner's policy, nor is earthquake," said Williamson.  "If a person is concerned about either of those perils, they'd want to talk with their agent to get a special endorsement or policy to cover those items."

Most insurers also offer policies that cover small businesses from severe storm damage.

"Honestly the policy is very similar to a homeowner's policy, except it's tailored to the business, so things like loss of income if the business is shut down, that would be paid for under that policy."

For those with property near the coast Williamson says some insurers may require an extra policy on your home or business.
