COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The Columbia Police Department is celebrating after winning a national award from the National Criminal Enforcement Association.

Chief Randy Scott and a few officers appeared on Good Day Columbia Monday to talk about the accomplishment.

The department won first place in the nation for thier drug suppression team.

The award was presented by Douglas Wright, Executive Director of the National Criminal Enforcement Association, on March 14 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There were 815 police officer attendees, guests from 38 states and 1 Canadian Province at the event.

Chief Randy Scott says CPD beat out agencies like Miami, Los Angeles and Chicago Police Departments for this award.

The department is being recognized for taking drugs off the streets.

“Some people would look at it as Columbia has a lot of narcotics. Drugs are everywhere. That poison is everywhere in our community. It takes the men and women who have to go out and really enforce the laws”, said Scott.

Officer William Mays was also given an award for the largest street level cocaine bust for the year.
