CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) -- Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews says his deputies are cracking down on dangerous and drunken drivers and it is making the county's roads safer.

Matthews told The State of Columbia that the $360,000 he received from County Council in 2011 for four new patrol cars equipped with radar and four deputies specially trained to make traffic stops has paid off. Kershaw County has had12 traffic fatalities this year, compared to 18 in 2010.

The sheriff says deputies have given out 4,500 traffic tickets and issued 6,300 warnings so far in 2012. They also have seized more than $100,000 from suspected drug dealers pulled over during traffic stops.

County Council member Jimmy Jones says he used to get plenty of complaints about speeders, but he doesn't hear them anymore.
