Columbia, S.C. (WACH) -- The holiday season is a time for giving but senior citizens are often overlooked.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department has teamed up with Home Instead Senior Care, Chick-fil-a and Pink Sorbet to make sure that the senior community is not forgotten this year.

"We have seniors in our community that needs a little bit of extra joy for Christmas, they might not have some presents coming their way," said Sheriff Leon Lott.

"Be a Santa to a Senior" is bringing smiles and tears to seniors' faces.

It means that I will have a good Christmas whether I'm with my family or not," said senior Beryle May.

The program collects gifts and donations to help out the elderly through the Sheriff's Department's PROJECT HOPE.

More than 600 seniors are in the program and they need your help with donations.

Visit the Chick-fil-a location on Bush River road to get a list of items needed and to drop off donations or supplies.
