COLUMBIA (WACH) - A new addition to Riverbanks Zoo, makes a surprise debut.

Winston, a 6-week-old male Giraffe became the seventh giraffe born at Riverbanks since February 2009.  The zoo's herd now has nine members, consisting of four females and five males. Winston was born October 30, 2012.

Curator of mammals John Davis said, "Because all of our females are on birth control, we really didn't expect Sharon was pregnant. Winston's arrival was quite a shock, but we're happy to have him as part of our herd."

Winston weighed nearly 100 pounds at birth; and although small now, once full grown, he could reach up to 18 feet tall. The record is 20 feet. Winston could weigh as much as 2,600 pounds.
