COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- A line of thunderstorms pushed through the Midlands early Wednesday morning bringing strong winds, frequent lightning, and hail to the area.

Major utilities reported about 50,000 customers were without service across the state at one point early in the morning.

Most of the storms have already moved offshore, but there are numerous reports of downed trees and power lines across the area.  Officials are working to clear trees and debris in many places.

Schools were also closed in Chester County because of the storms.

South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. reported nearly 15,000 without service, most in Richland County.

Progress Energy reported about 1,400 customers without service from Sumter to Darlington..

There have been no reports of injuries at this time.
