It was another Saturday full of baseball for the Gamecocks. South Carolina played another doubleheader, this time against Kentucky.
Game One was a slugfest at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky. The Gamecocks jumped all over the Wildcats early with a season high 25 hits and led Kentucky 13-2 after 4 innings on the diamond.
USC was able to hold off a late rally from the Wildcats going on to win 20-19.
It was a career day for many Gamecocks, including Jackie Bradley, Jr., Whit Merrifield, and Justin Dalles, who all had four hits. Andrew Crisp tied a career best with two long balls. Jackie Bradley, Jr. also knocked in four runs, tying his best day. Starting pitcher Sam Dyson allowed 8 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings and earned the win, improving to 4-1 on the season.
Later that evening in Game Two, the Gamecocks were looking to wrap up the Saturday sweep, taking the lead 4-3 in the top of the 9th on a bunt by the Gamecocks' Scott Wingo. Bottom of the 9th - Ray Tanner goes to the bullpen, calling for southpaw Alex Farotto, who earned the save in Game 1 of the doubleheader. It was not such a good outing in Game Two for Farotto though, allowing the walk off homer to Kentucky's Andy Burns.
The Wildcats split the doubleheader with the Gamecocks Saturday, winning Game Two 5-4. The rubber match is Sunday at one.
