COLUMBIA (WACH)– The defense scored off a pair of fumbles to highlight Benedict College's eighth football practice on Wednesday.

“I'm really happy with the defense,” said Benedict head football coach James Woody. “Those guys are flying all over. There's a lot of energy from the defense. The offense has to pick it up a notch. Usually the defense is ahead of the offense early on. The defense played well today, creating turnovers and flying to the football.”

While the turnovers were a plus for the defense, it was an area of concern for the offensive unit.

“We've got to stop fumbling the football. We had four fumbles today throughout practice,” Woody said. “We just cannot have that. We've got to protect the football.”

Quarterback Marcus Graham continues to make strides. Among his highlights during Wednesday's practice were a long touchdown pass, and another perfectly-placed throw to a receiver in heavy coverage.

“Graham had a good day throwing the football,” Woody said. “He's got to understand he's got to stay with his keys. A lot of times he gets away from his reads and tries to create things that aren't there. If he just stays with the system and stays with his read progression, he'll be a phenomenal football player.”

Woody also praised the performance of freshman running back Trent Miles. Miles, from Phenix, Alabama, started fall practice as the third-string running back, and now is pushing for the starting job.

“That kids Miles is really standing out,” Woody said “Right now he's putting a lot of pressure on that starting running back position.”

The Tigers return to action on Thursday with two practices.
