COLUMBIA (WACH) - It is the first time in three seasons that the Gamecock baseball team returned from Omaha without a championship trophy, but the fans did not seem to notice.

A large crowd of Gamecock fans gathered at Carolina Stadium to welcome the players back to Columbia Tuesday afternoon.

"Getting back here is good," said senior Adam Matthews.

The team accomplished this season what only two other schools have ever done by playing in the College World Series finals three years in a row.

Michael Roth, who wrapped up his career with the Gamecocks Monday, said "It's been a great four years."

Roth was selected in the ninth round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Though the Monday night loss to Arizona was disappointing, the mindset of the team and the fans is positive as the program moves forward.

Cheering fans of all ages watched the hometown heroes with pride. They all seemed to agree with junior Christian Walker who said, "It's been awesome."

Walker and Matthews were both drafted by the Baltimore Orioles.
