CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- New Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables ran onto Clemson's practice fields with his players Tuesday to start rebuilding a group tarnished by its embarrassing performance at the Orange Bowl last season.
Venables was hired in January to replace Kevin Steele, let go after three seasons in the aftermath of Clemson's 70-33 loss to West Virginia, which established a bowl record for points scored. The Atlantic Coast Conference championships were making their first appearance in a BCS bowl and looked helpless against the Mountaineers for much of the game.
Venables was hired from Oklahoma to correct those problems.
He was active and loud in early drills, pushing his linebackers into position as the Tigers went through the workout. Venables agreed to a four-year deal worth $800,000 to join the Tigers.
