COLUMBIA (WACH) - Benedict College hired James Woody as the school's new football coach.  Woody replaces Stan Conner, who was fired Friday.

“I'm really looking forward to get going,” Woody said. “My first priority here is to make sure we put a team on the field that can be competitive - competitive week in and week out.”

Woody comes to Benedict with 25 years of experience as an assistant coach, most recently at Jackson State University in Mississippi.

Conner was fired a day after the Tigers fell to Fort Valley State 40-23, dropping to 1-3 on the season.  Expectations were high for Benedict coming into the start of the season.

“We are very appreciative of the work of Coach Conner,” said Willie Washington, Benedict College Director of Athletics. “But as life has it, changes take place, and this is one of those changes that occurred here at Benedict College.”

Woody will coach his first game October 1st against Miles College in Augusta, GA.
