Columbia (WACH) - The South Carolina women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker Thursday night, losing 55-53 to Mississippi State at Colonial Life Arena.
The Gamecocks had a chance to tie the game with 2.9 seconds remaining, but Kelsey Bone's shot fell short. The freshman finished with 13 rebounds and 6 points.
Junior guard Valerie Nainima led the USC scoring attack with 15 points. Charenee Stephens and Ieasia Walker each chipped in with 10 points.
The Gamecocks fell to 13-11 and 6-6 in SEC play. USC had won two straight road games coming in, including a win at No. 14 Georgia earlier in the week, and were hoping to beef up their resume for a possible berth in the NCAA tournament.
Mississippi State improves to 16-9 and 7-5 with the win.
South Carolina is back in action Sunday afternoon when they host the Arkansas Razorbacks.
