INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Vitor Meira is out of the hospital three days after breaking two bones in his back in a crash during the Indianapolis 500.

Wearing a back brace, the Brazilian driver left Methodist Hospital on Wednesday morning in a wheelchair but stood to talk with reporters. He plans to return to his home in Miami this weekend if he gets the OK from his doctors, and he says he does not expect his injury will require surgery.

Meira crashed with rookie Raphael Matos, who bruised his right knee and was released from the track hospital shortly after the crash.

Meira hopes to return for the final race of the season in October. A.J. Foyt Racing has hired veteran Paul Tracy to drive in his place this week at Milwaukee.
