(AP) -- The New York Mets wanted to come away with a closer at the baseball winter meetings this week. They are very close to doing that.
The New York Mets and Francisco Rodriguez have reached a preliminary agreement on a three-year, $37 million package. Two people familiar with the negotiations tell The Associated Press the two sides still have to work out a written agreement, and the 26-year-old right-hander must pass a physical.
Rodriguez recorded a single-season record 62 saves for the Los Angeles Angels this year before filing for free agency.
