NEW YORK (AP) -- Rays third baseman Evan Longoria and Cubs catcher Giovanni Soto come away with baseball's Rookie of the Year awards.
Longoria was a unanimous choice by the Baseball Writers' Association of America and is the first Rays player to win the honor. The 23-year-old hit .272 with 27 homers and 85 RBIs in 122 games following an early season call-up.
Soto fell one vote shy of being a unanimous choice for the National League award. He batted .285 in 2008 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs. Soto the first catcher to win the award in either league since Mike Piazza did it in 1993 with the Dodgers.
The NL Cy Young Award will be awarded Tuesday afternoon.
