ORANGEBURG (WACH) - SC State honored Hall of Fame Coach Willie Jeffries on Saturday, by officially naming the Oliver C. Dawson Field after him.

Last Thursday the SC State Board of Trustees voted to name the football field after the legendary coach.

“It’s such an honor,” Jeffries said. “It’s so great when your Alma Mater recognizes you and I’m so proud of it. I appreciate the administration and the board of trustees and off of the people made it possible for this to happen.”

Jeffries is the winningest head coach in SC State history. In his 19 seasons with the Bulldogs, Jeffries led State to five MEAC titles and two National Championships.

“Even Buddy Pough said that they are honored to play in here and they are going to make the old coach look good so, it’s all positive,” Jeffries added.
