COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) - A memorial service was held for a former Gamecock football coach who passed away earlier this week.

Jim Carlen died in Columbia on Sunday at age 79. A cause of death was not given.

The memorial service was held at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church Friday afternoon.

Friends and family gathered to remember the life of Carlen.

Steve Spurrier was among those in attendance.

"Coach Jim Carlen, he's one of the great coaches in South Carolina history," said Spurrier.

While remembering Carlen, Spurrier said, "He actually recruited me out of high school when he was an assistant at Georgia Tech, so I guess you can say I've sort of known him since 1962"

Carlen coached the Gamecocks from 1975 to 1981. He recruited the school's only Heisman Trophy winner, George Rogers.
