COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - Freshman left-hander Jack Wynkoop threw 5.1 scoreless innings in his first career start helping No. 7 South Carolina to a 5-2 win over Furman Tuesday afternoon at Carolina Stadium.
The Gamecocks are now 6-1 on the season, while Furman dropped to 5-2 for the year.
Wynkoop gave up just five hits, no walks, and struck out two batters. The lefty earned his first career win. Sophomore right-hander Evan Beal was came out of the bullpen to throw 2.2 perfect innings, striking out three. Senior Tyler Webb pitched one scoreless inning of relief pick up his third save of the season.
South Carolina drove in all the runs they needed in the bottom of the fifth inning when Erik Payne came up with the bases loaded. Payne drove in Max Schrock on a fielders choice. The ground ball was fielded cleanly by the Furman third baseman but he committed a throwing error trying to get Payne out at first. Schrock and Dantzler were able to score on the play. Grayson Greiner followed with an RBI single to give the Gamecocks a 3-0 lead.
The Gamecocks are back in action this weekend with a three-game series against arch-rival Clemson. Fridays game at Clemson is scheduled for 6:30 pm. Saturdays game is set for 2pm at Fluor Field in Greenville. First pitch for Sundays series finale is set for 3pm at Carolina Stadium.
