CLEMSON, S.C. (WACH) - Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd says he will return to play his senior season with the Tigers.
Boyd made the announcement that he will hold off on entering the NFL draft at a Wednesday afternoon news conference, a little more than a week after he helped lead Clemson to a 25-24 win over LSU at the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.
The redshirt junior says his decision to stay is more "team-driven" because Boyd feels he and his teammates have the chance to leave a legacy and be mentioned with some of the all-time great Clemson teams.
"I've enjoyed my time here at Clemson. I've been part of a great family and learned so much as a person and as a player," said Boyd. "I 'm not ready to give it up yet. It was a big process I had pros and cons for each side. For me, it came down to me enjoying being at Clemson. I love playing college football and I feel like we have a lot of goals left on the table."
Boyd says he sought advice from Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, a fellow Virginia native, about the decision and was also told by NFL evaluators that he needed to work on his footwork and accuracy.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is pleased that the quarterback who helped power the Tigers to the 2011 ACC championship is coming back for another run.
"He made the best decision for himself and for Clemson," said Swinney. "This is great for our program because I think he is the best quarterback in the country. He is not only the leader of our offense, he is the leader of this team."
The quarterback's list of accomplisments back up Swinney's statement. Boyd was named the ACC player of the year in late November, leading the conference in total offense, touchdown passes with 34, and touchdowns rushing and passing by racking up a total of 43. Boyd also set a Clemson record with 529 yards of total offense against NC State, and broke the ACC mark for touchdowns rushing and passing with eight in that same game.
Boyd was named first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association, becoming the first ACC quarterback to make first-team All-American on any team since Boston College's Matt Ryan in 2007.
