COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Defending football champion Goose Creek has been disqualified from the state playoffs by the South Carolina High School League.

The league said Tuesday that the Berkeley County high school used an ineligible player and has been removed from the postseason. The league said Conway will replace the Gators and is scheduled to play Battery Creek in the Class 4A Division II playoffs on Friday.

Goose Creek (11-0) was the top-seeded school in the 16-team playoffs.

Dru Nix with the league says Goose Creek will have an appeal at the SCHSL headquarters in Columbia on Wednesday.

Earlier, Class 4A power Byrnes High was disqualified and reinstated after its appeal.
