COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Former college football coach Jim Carlen, who served West Virginia, Texas Tech and South Carolina, has died.
(AP) --
Dunbar Funeral Home said Carlen died in Columbia on Sunday at age 79. A cause of death was not given.

Carlen coached the Gamecocks from 1975 to 1981. He recruited the school's only Heisman Trophy winner, George Rogers.

Carlen was a punter and linebacker for Georgia Tech and first became a head coach at West Virginia in 1966. Texas Tech hired Carlen in 1970 after he led the Mountaineers to their second ever 10-win season. In 1973, Carlen led the Red Raiders to their second-ever 11-win season.

Carlen's 45 victories at South Carolina rank third in the program's more than 100 years of football.

Carlen's coaching record was 107-69-6 over 16 seasons.
