COLUMBIA (WACH) - The Columbia Blowfish are looking for a new home for their baseball club and it could be in Lexington county.

The baseball club has played in the historic Capital City Stadium since 2006. The club is taking steps to build a new multi-purpose facility, which would include baseball, football, soccer, concerts and numerous other events.

This move comes after Columbia city council voted to approve the sale of stadium property to a developer with ties to Walmart.

The relocation of the Blowfish organization could benefit local businesses in Lexington county while creating more jobs in the Midlands.

President of the Columbia Blowfish organization Bill Shanahan likes the idea of building a stadium in Lexington.  "We are looking at sites that would have easy interstate access so fans in the Midlands could get to within twenty-five minutes or less," Shanahan stated.  "We have had discussions with both the Mayor of Lexington and Lexington County officials about this opportunity for their respective communities."

Other plans in the area for multi-purpose stadiums have failed in recent years.  Earlier this decade, a group of investers put together a plan for the Columbia Inferno, a minor league hockey team, which ultimately failed.  However, Shanahan is optimistic he can put together a plan that will work.
