CLEMSON - Freshman righthander Daniel Gossett struck out 13 batters and three Tigers hit long balls in Clemson's 11-0 win over Winthrop at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Tigers improved to 15-13, while the Eagles dropped to 9-21.
The Tigers took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning before blowing the game open with six runs in the fourth. Meanwhile, Gossett (3-2) retired the first 15 batters before surrendering a leadoff single in the sixth inning. He gave up two hits in the sixth, but he held the Eagles off the scoreboard and allowed the Tigers to record their first shutout of the season. His 13 strikeouts were the most by a Tiger since May 31, 2009, when freshman lefthander Chris Dwyer totaled 13 strikeouts against Oklahoma State in the Tigers' 15-1 win in the Clemson Regional.
Richie Shaffer, Phil Pohl and Jason Stolz hit home runs for the Tigers. Steve Wilkerson extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
Clemson will conclude its home-and-home season series against Western Carolina when it hosts the Catamounts at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Wednesday at 4:00 PM. The game was originally scheduled to start at 6:30 PM, but the threat of inclement weather forced the change.
