CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Brent Venables says he never would have left Oklahoma if he didn't see the same championship potential at Clemson.

Venables was introduced Friday as the Tigers new defensive coordinator. He takes over for Kevin Steele, who left last week after three years in charge of Clemson's defense.

Venables was visiting a recruit the night of the Orange Bowl and didn't watch much of the game in which Clemson gave up a bowl-record 70 points in losing to West Virginia. Venables says he won't worry about that and believes there's plenty of talent to keep the Tigers on top in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Venables spent 13 seasons leading Oklahoma's defense and helped the Sooners win a national championship in 2000.
