CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson is adding women's golf to its athletic program, hoping to match the impact of the men's golf team.

Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips announced the addition of women's golf on Monday. The team will begin play during the 2013-14 academic year.

Men's coach Larry Penley will serve as the school's director of golf and will hire a women's coach.

Phillips said the program would be fully funded, offering six scholarships. He said Clemson has long discussed fielding a women's golf program, and he and Penley think it can be nationally competitive.

The women's team will have a clubhouse facility at The Walker Course on campus.

Clemson's men won the 2003 NCAA championship. The Tigers have featured PGA Tour winners Lucas Glover, Jonathan Byrd and D.J. Trahan.
