Gamecocks taken in 2011 MLB Draft

Jackie Bradley Jr.

South Carolina junior outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has been selected in the compensation round of the 2011 MLB Draft.  Bradley was the No. 40 overall pick in the draft by the Boston Red Sox.  He is the first current Gamecock player to be selected in this year’s draft.  Bradley has been out of the lineup for the Gamecocks since April 23 when he injured his left wrist in attempting to make a catch in center field.  Bradley was the 2010 Most Outstanding Player at the College World Series and has hit .336 in his career with the Garnet & Black with 30 career homers and 132 career RBI.

Earlier this year, Bradley Jr. became the 24th player in South Carolina history to record 200 or more career hits with a home run vs. Rhode Island.  Bradley currently has 214 career hits.

Matt Price

South Carolina sophomore right-hander Matt Price has been selected in sixth round of the 2011 MLB Draft.  Price was the No. 184 overall pick in the draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.  He is the second current Gamecock player to be selected in this year’s draft.  In addition, Price has been named a finalist for the 2011 NCBWA Stopper of the Year award.

Price, an All-SEC selection and also a semifinalist for the Howser Award, owns a 5-3 record and 17 saves for the 2011 season with a 2.25 ERA. This is the second straight year Price has earned all-conference accolades, as he was a second-team choice as a freshman in 2010. Price has struck out 63 batters in 48.0 innings and opponents are hitting only .202 against him.

Scott Wingo

South Carolina senior infielder Scott Wingo has been selected in the 11th round of the 2011 MLB Draft.  Wingo was the No. 344 overall pick in the draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.  He is the third current Gamecock player to be selected in this year’s draft.   Jackie Bradley Jr. was selected in the supplemental round yesterday by the Red Sox and Matt Price was a sixth round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Wingo earned first-team All-SEC honors this year and was named yesterday to the 2011 NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team.   The senior captain led the team in hitting in SEC games with a .380 clip in 30 conference games. Wingo is hitting .335 (71-for-212) for the year and has a .468 on-base percentage that is among the best in the SEC. It is also the second consecutive year he earned All-SEC Defensive honors.

Peter Mooney & John Taylor

South Carolina junior infielder Peter Mooney was selected in the 21st round of the 2011 MLB Draft as the No. 649 overall pick in the draft by the Toronto Blue Jays with senior right-hander John Taylor selected in the 22nd round by the Seattle Mariners as the No. 663 overall pick. Five current Gamecocks have been selected in this year’s draft.  Jackie Bradley Jr. was selected in the supplemental round yesterday by the Boston Red Sox with Matt Price a sixth round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Scott Wingo an 11th round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In his first season with the Garnet & Black, Mooney is hitting .272 (62-for-228) on the year with 13 doubles, a triple, three homers and 32 RBI.  He is one of two Gamecock players to have started all 62 games for the season along with first baseman Christian Walker.

Taylor is among the leaders in the nation with a 1.32 ERA and a 5-1 record in 43 appearances, a single-season school record.  He has 61 strikeouts in 61.1 innings pitched and opponents are hitting only .178 against him.

Adam Matthews

South Carolina junior outfielder Adam Matthews was selected in the 23rd round of the 2011 MLB Draft as the No. 695 overall pick by the Baltimore Orioles.  Matthews is the sixth current Gamecock to be drafted this year. Jackie Bradley Jr. was selected in the supplemental round yesterday by the Boston Red Sox with Matt Price a sixth round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Scott Wingo an 11th round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Peter Mooney was selected in the 21st round by the Toronto Blue Jays with senior right-hander John Taylor selected in the 22nd round by the Seattle Mariners..

Matthews is hitting .269 (29-for-108) for the season with a pair of homers and 14 RBI to go along with 25 runs scored. Matthews has played in 30 games with 29 starts but has seen minimal action since straining his hamstring on April 16 vs. Vanderbilt. 

Bryan Harper

South Carolina junior left-handed pitcher Bryan Harper was selected in the 30th round of the 2011 MLB Draft as the No. 907 overall pick by the Washington Nationals.  Harper is the seventh current Gamecock to be drafted this year. Jackie Bradley Jr. was selected in the supplemental round yesterday by the Boston Red Sox with Matt Price a sixth round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Scott Wingo an 11th round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Peter Mooney was selected in the 21st round by the Toronto Blue Jays with senior right-hander John Taylor selected in the 22nd round by the Seattle Mariners and Adam Matthews in the 23rd round by the Baltimore Orioles

Harper for the season is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA.  He has 18 strikeouts in 18.1 innings pitched and 22 appearances with a save as well.  Opponents hit just .250 against him.

Michael Roth

South Carolina junior left-handed pitcher Michael Roth was selected in the 31st round of the 2011 MLB Draft as the No. 938 overall pick by the Cleveland Indians.  Roth is the eighth current Gamecock to be drafted this year.  Jackie Bradley Jr. was selected in the supplemental round by the Boston Red Sox with Matt Price a sixth round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Scott Wingo an 11th round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Peter Mooney was selected in the 21st round by the Toronto Blue Jays with senior right-hander John Taylor selected in the 22nd round by the Seattle Mariners, Adam Matthews in the 23rd round by the Baltimore Orioles and Bryan Harper in the 30th round by the Washington Nationals.


Steven Neff

South Carolina junior left-handed pitcher/outfielder Steven Neff was selected in the 41st round of the 2011 MLB Draft as the No. 1,257 overall pick by the San Francisco Giants.  Neff is the ninth current Gamecock to be drafted this year.  Jackie Bradley Jr. was selected in the supplemental round by the Boston Red Sox with Matt Price a sixth round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Scott Wingo an 11th round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Peter Mooney was selected in the 21st round by the Toronto Blue Jays with senior right-hander John Taylor selected in the 22nd round by the Seattle Mariners, Adam Matthews in the 23rd round by the Baltimore Orioles and Bryan Harper in the 30th round by the Washington Nationals.  The Cleveland Indians earlier selected Michael Roth today in the 31st round.

Tyler Webb & Adrian Morales 

South Carolina sophomore left-handed pitcher Tyler Webb was selected in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB Draft as the No. 1,465 overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds with senior infielder Adrian Morales going in the 49th round as the No. 1,476 overall pick to the Kansas City Royals.  That makes it 11 current Gamecocks selected in this year’s draft.  Jackie Bradley Jr. was selected in the supplemental round by the Boston Red Sox with Matt Price a sixth round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Scott Wingo an 11th round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Peter Mooney was selected in the 21st round by the Toronto Blue Jays with senior right-hander John Taylor selected in the 22nd round by the Seattle Mariners, Adam Matthews in the 23rd round by the Baltimore Orioles and Bryan Harper in the 30th round by the Washington Nationals.  The Cleveland Indians earlier selected Michael Roth today in the 31st round with Steven Neff also taken in day three in the 41st round by the San Francisco Giants.
