SUNDERLAND, England (AP) — The Sunderland fan who racially abused the mother of the club's star striker has been banned from football matches for three years.

John Davison abused the mother of Darren Bent as she walked past him on the way to watch the England international play at Wigan Athletic on Nov. 28.

Davison pleaded guilty Tuesday to using threatening words or behavior in a racially aggravated manner.

He was also fined 170 pounds and ordered to pay Shirley Bent 50 pounds compensation.

Bent wrote on his Twitter page after the match that he "won't stand for" such abuse.
