COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's Devan Downey was named the Southeastern Conference's player of the week after leading the Gamecocks to victories over Kentucky and Georgia.
Downey is the SEC's leading scorer this season, averaging more than 31 points in his seven league games so far.
Downey scored 30 points and hit several big shots down the stretch as South Carolina beat a top-ranked team for the first time in its history with its 68-62 victory over Kentucky. Four days later, Downey put up 33 points, including the game-winning basket as the Gamecocks rallied from nine points down to beat Georgia 78-77.
