CENTRAL (AP) -- School officials are closing a high school basketball doubleheader between rivals in northwestern South Carolina because of safety concerns.
Multiple media outlets reported the Seneca-Daniel boys' and girls' games in Central on Friday will be closed to the public.
Seneca Police Chief John Covington says officers have seen a trend of disturbances and violence after the games that spill into the parking lot and neighborhoods. Covington says he thinks school officials made the right decision to ensure public safety.
Attendance will be limited to players, coaches, officials, game personnel, school administrators, police and the media.
School officials say they met with police and the South Carolina High School League on the decision.
Junior varsity games in Seneca have been canceled.
