SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is happy with his contract, even though he got about $50 million less than last year's No. 1 pick in Sam Bradford.

Newton signed a four-year, $22 million contract Friday night and was in camp to take part in Saturday's first workout. The deal was set by the new rookie wage scale in the recent collective bargaining agreement between NFL owners and players. It left Newton far from Bradford's whopping $78 million over six years from St. Louis in 2010.

Newton said despite the disparity, he's getting more money than he ever dreamed. He says if he plays up to his capabilities during his time with the Panthers, more lucrative contracts will follow.
