Newberry College Wolves drop season finale to Wingate, 49-33

Newberry ends its season at 4-6 overall and 3-4 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Wingate earned its first-ever outright SAC title at 8-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Wingate now awaits the announcement of the NCAA Division II palyoff field on Sunday afternoon.

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry senior wide receiver David Pressley set a new school mark for receiving yards in a season, but five touchdown passes from Wingate quarterback Cody Haffly and four interceptions thrown by Newberry quarterbacks gave the visiting Bulldogs a 49-33 win at Setzler Field in the regular season finale Saturday.

Newberry ends its season at 4-6 overall and 3-4 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Wingate earned its first-ever outright SAC title at 8-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Wingate now awaits the announcement of the NCAA Division II palyoff field on Sunday afternoon.

Pressley (Anderson, S.C.) caught 12 passes for a career high 183 yards and a touchdown to wrap up his stellar career. He completed the best season by a Newberry receiver with a school record 86 catches for 1,117 yards and 11 touchdowns. Pressley is the first Newberry receiver to break the 1,000-yard mark in a season, as the record was previously held by Tymere Zimmerman with 977 yards in 2004. The 1,117 yards this year is the sixth-most in a season in the 35-year history of the South Atlantic Conference.

Newberry quarterback Parker Hite (Ninety Six, S.C.) completed 18-of-28 passes for a career-high 266 yards with a touchdown and also rushed for two touchdowns. Cornerback Kamaal McIlwain returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, and Brian Spencer (Columbia, S.C.) blocked his third punt of the season.

Wingate quarterback Cody Haffly (Locust Grove, Ga.) led the Bulldogs to a stellar offensive performance, completeing 19-of-31 passes for 285 yards and five touchdowns. Nelson Woods (Charlotte, N.C.) had 26 carries for 181 yards and two scores. Delric Ellington (Charlotte, N.C.) had 10 receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns. Perry Floyd (Gastonia, N.C.) had four receptions for 54 yards and two touchdowns.
