COLUMBIA (WACH) - South Carolina Head Football Coach Steve Spurrier got his 18th straight home opener win Thursday night against the Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi.

The Gamecock offense gained almost 500 yards and redshirt junior quarterback Stephen Garcia scored two touchdowns – and did not turn the ball over once.

"He ran over that guy on about the eight yard line and carooned into the endzone. That was a heck of a play and that was the first score of the game. So at that time that was a good drive," said Spurrier.

"Were going to come in and watch film tomorrow and I’ll hear what he has to say and take it and you know, try and get better. I hope I played pretty well, I think I did," said Garcia.

As promised we saw plenty of true freshman quarterback Connor Shaw.

"Ah Connor, he's got a lot of ability. He can run - he got clobbered a few times, right at the end of the first half. But that was a nice throw and catch to DL Moore," said Spurrier.

"It was amazing to just have the opportunity to play at this level in my very first game. The atmosphere was amazing. I was just trying to take it all in, I was trying to, as nervous as I was. But I just had fun out there," said Shaw.

Much hyped freshman running back Marcus Lattimore gave the crowd what it wanted, with two first half touchdowns.

He gained 54 yards in his garnet and black debut.

"It's really incredible like you said - to finally get on the field and play cause I worked hard for it. I just gotta keep pushing," said Lattimore.

The Gamecocks have a little more than a week to prepare for their next game.

They face SEC foe UGA on Sept 11th at home at noon.
