COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH/AP) - South Carolina forward Carlton Geathers has had arthroscopic surgery on his injured right kneecap.

Gamecocks coach Frank Martin said Tuesday that Geathers had undergone the procedure because the injury was not healing as expected. Geathers sustained a right kneecap fracture back in July during a summer pro-am league game in Columbia on Thursday, July 19. At the time, he was expected to miss six months of action.

Martin said his 6-foot-10 sophomore had been running steps at the Colonial Life Arena, but trainers found he was not making the progress they expected. Martin said South Carolina will look into whether Geathers can receive a medical waiver from the NCAA to play an additional season since he had previously redshirted.

The Georgetown, S.C. native saw action in 28 games with one start during the 2011-2012 season. He averaged 1.0 point, 1.5 rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game, playing roughly eight minutes per game as a reserve.
