Cross claims first Class A Division II state title

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Devante Shepherd ran for 166 yards and three touchdowns to lead Cross to a 38-26 victory over McCormick to capture its first Class A Division II State championship.

Shepherd scored on a 7-yard run with 2:18 left in the first quarter and added an 11-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds to play in the period. He had a 66-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

Dionte Evans returned the second-half kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to give the Trojans (11-3) a 20-0 lead, but the Chiefs (11-3) rallied with three third-quarter touchdowns and trailed 32-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

The teams combined for 348 yards and 40 points in the third quarter.

Evans scored on a 29-yard run to put the game out of reach with 1:29 left.
