COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - A Midlands high school basketball player has joined an exclusive club by netting more than 1,000 career points.

A.C. Flora point guard Kyeshia Dawkins went in to Tuesday night's game against Camden just 21 points shy of the mark, but, that was the last thing on her mind.

"I asked coach about it. I asked can you see if I'm even close," said Dawkins. "But, it wasn't a big deal to me at all."

According to A.C. Flora athletics officials, Dawkins is just the fifth player in program history to reach 1,000 career points, an elusive and impressive milestone for any high school player to reach.

The four-year starter ended up scoring a game-high 31 points to reach the goal, but her team came up short. It was a tough blow for a group that is fighting for a playoff spot.

"I'm just worrying about playing. Giving it my all and winning with my team," said Dawkins.

The senior has not received heavy interest from many college coaches, which surprises her coach, Patti Moore, but, Dawkins is hoping to play basketball at the next level and wants to study psychology at either Winthrop University or UNC-Charlotte.

Moore calls Dawkins "a great kid" who is like an extension of the coaching staff on the floor.

"As a coach you always say if you could take bits and pieces of one kid and put it in another kid, you always say I'd have the perfect kid," said Moore. "Well, Kye's close to it."

A.C. Flora will have to be close to perfect to secure a playoff berth. They have four games left, including two against Region 4-3A powerhouses Lower Richland and Dreher.

"We need to win," said Dawkins. "I'm trying to get to the playoffs with my team and make it as far as we can. That's my biggest goal.:"

And with Dawkins' ability to pile up points, the A.C. Flora Falcons have a fighting chance.
