COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - The University of South Carolina Board of Trustees has approved a two-year contract extension for head football coach Steve Spurrier.

The move was announced Monday and keeps Spurrier contracted to the football program through the 2017 season.  There was no salary increase included in the deal. Spurrier is scheduled to again earn $3.3 million in 2013.

"We have had another tremendous year on the football field, winning 10 games for the second-straight year and for just the third time in school history," said athletics director Ray Tanner. "Over the last two days, we have been rewarded accordingly. First, we were selected to play a traditional football power like Michigan in the Outback Bowl, then Coach Spurrier agreed to this two-year contract extension. Our student-athletes are not only having tremendous success on the field, but also in the classroom. Coach Spurrier continues to take our program to heights never before reached at South Carolina, as is well-deserving of this contract extension."

A year ago, trustees gave Spurrier two additional years on the contract after the football season, then voted him a raise of $475,000 this past February to his current salary.

Spurrier has led the Gamecocks to consecutive seasons with double-digit victories, a first in program history. No. 11 South Carolina finished 6-2 in the Southeastern Conference for a second straight year. Spurrier became the school's all-time victories leader with his 65th win when the Gamecocks defeated Clemson 27-17 in the regular season finale, surpassing the previous mark held by Rex Enright.

"I appreciate the confidence the Board, the President and the Athletics Director have shown by extending my contract," said Spurrier. "We have achieved a lot of goals but have not yet won the SEC Championship. Hopefully, we can do that within the next couple of years."

On Sunday, the Gamecocks were selected to make their fourth trip to the Outback Bowl. They are slated to play Michigan in the January 1 game in Tampa.
