AIKEN, SC (WACH) - A man is dead after crashing his car off of Highway 278 Wednesday night.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton says 23-year-old Danny G. Chalker Jr., of Langley was driving a late model Honda Accord around 10 p.m. when the car left the road, struck a telephone pole, went through a chain link fence and struck a tree. Chalker was pronounced dead at the scene around 7:30 a.m. Thursday. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

During the incident, Chalker's vehicle traveled through the yards of several homes and one resident reported hearing a loud sound around 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to the coroner.

Authorities were notified of the crash after it was discovered after 7 a.m. Thursday.

The crash is remains under investigation and the cause is unknown at this time.
