Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron is set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch to open the final season of Blowfish baseball at Columbia's Capital City Stadium.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron is set to open up the final season of baseball at Columbia's Capital City Stadium.
Aaron will throw out the first pitch on opening night for the Columbia Blowfish to open the club's final season at the stadium.
The Hall of Famer played his final minor league baseball game with the Jacksonville Braves against the Columbia Reds in 1953 at Capital City Stadium.
The land on which Capital City Stadium sits has been sold to a developer by the city of Columbia. The final plans for the land are still not clear. However, it is certain this will be the last season of baseball at the historic park.
"We are all very honored that Hank has accepted our invititation to throw out the ceremonial first pitch opening night," said Blowfish president Bill Shanahan. "This will be the start of a season of great memories at the Cap."
Shanahan says a series of events are being planned to salute the Columbia Reds, Mets, and Bombers in addition to many of the players and staffers who worked at the stadium over the years.
The defending Coastal Plain League champion Columbia Blowfish open the season May 28 at 7:05pm at Capital City Stadium. Tickets are available by calling the box office at 803-254-FISH.
