Clemson's Dabo Swinney has been named a finalist for coach of the year in college football.
CLEMSON, SC (WACH) - Clemson's Dabo Swinney is being called one of the top college football coaches in the country.
On Tuesday, Liberty Mutual Insurance named Swinney one of ten finalists for the 2012 Liberty Mutual coach of the year award. The annual distinction recognizes coaches for their commitment to sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility and excellence, on and off the field.
Swinney has led Clemson to a 10-2 regular season record, including a 7-1 mark in the ACC, the most regular season conference wins in Clemson history. The Tigers have also earned a berth in the December 31 Chick-Fil-A Bowl where No. 14 Clemson will square off with ninth-ranked LSU.
The 10 coach of the year finalists were determined through fan voting.The coaches receiving the most votes were then evaluated on a number of criteria including wins, team penalties, sportsmanship, academic performance by their student-athletes, and charitable commitments in the community.
The other finalists joining Swinney are are Brian Kelly of Notre Dame, Urban Meyer of Ohio State, UCLA's Jim Mo, Bill O'Brien of Penn State, Georgia's Mark Richt, Nick Saban of Alabama, Kevin Sumlin of Texas A&M, and Louisville's Charlie Strong.
