Record-setting performance in classroom for Gamecock football team

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's football team added a record performance in the classroom to its record-setting season last fall.

The school said Thursday the football team achieved highest semester grade-point average ever of 2.781 in the recently finished spring semester. The Gamecocks set a program record with 11 victories last fall.

Men's track and field also had its best-ever showing this spring with a 3.269 GPA.

South Carolina said the school's athletes also their best overall showing with a 3.202 GPA. Fourteen of the athletic department's 17 teams had grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. That included the baseball team at 3.052. Gamecock baseball is taking part in the College World Series.

Men's golf had the highest team average at 3.526. The highest women's team was volleyball at 3.493.
