COLUMBIA – College of Charleston blasted three home runs in the first three innings and held off a late rally to defeat South Carolina 4-3 Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Carolina Stadium. South Carolina is now 27-11 on the year with College of Charleston improving to 26-12 for the season.
A two-run homer by Daniel Aldrich in the first inning and solo home runs by Brandon Glazer and Bradley Goodson in the second and third innings gave the Cougars a four-run cushion. South Carolina starter Nolan Belcher suffered the loss and is now 2-2 on the year. He allowed four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings with no walks and five strikeouts.
USC scored a run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI double by L.B. Dantzler. Tanner English bounced a two-run single to left in the eighth to bring the Gamecocks within 4-3.
Charleston closer David Peterson earned his ninth save of the year by getting Grayson Greiner to fly out to right field with a runner on first.
South Carolina is back in action this weekend with a three-game series at Auburn. First pitch for the opener is 7 p.m. ET on Friday evening.
