COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Malls may be a little emptier and the pool deck may be a little less crowded. It's time for high school football practice in South Carolina.
Friday is the first day the South Carolina High School League allows member schools to hold practices for fall sports. That gives football teams across the state about a month to prepare for the 2009 season.
While the summer workouts are a long-standing tradition, recommendations from a national training group caution coaches to get players accustomed to workouts during hot, humid weather.
Most SCHSL teams begin their seasons on Aug. 21 or Aug. 28.
