Venables was hired in January to replace Kevin Steele, let go after three seasons in the aftermath of Clemson's 70-33 loss to West Virginia, which established a bowl record for points scored. The Atlantic Coast Conference championships were making their first appearance in a BCS bowl and looked helpless against the Mountaineers for much of the game.
