CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A nonprofit group based in Charleston is organizing volunteers to clean debris from Long Island beaches hammered by Superstorm Sandy.

Rudy Socha with the group Wounded Nature Working Veterans says he plans to have at least several hundred volunteers working to clean beaches on Jamaica Bay next week.

The beaches are part of the National Park Service Gateway National Recreation Area that includes beaches in New York and New Jersey.

Wounded Nature is an environmental group working to buy houseboats to allow the cleanup of remote East Coast shorelines.

Socha says the houseboats will provide a place for veterans to live during cleanups in remote areas. He says the projects will give unemployed vets temporary jobs and work skills.
