COLUMBIA (WACH) - A woman who told police she had been sexually assaulted in Five Points is now accused of making up the story.
Columbia Police said Heather Atkins, 26, is charged with perjury / false swearing to police and filing a false police report.
Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott says Atkins is accused of telling police that she was sexually assaulted by a black male at around 3 a.m. last Friday at the 700 block of Harden Street near Five Points
According to authorities, Atkins told police two black males approached her while she was walking along the sidewalk. She claimed one male punched her in the eye and both carried her to the 700 block of Harden Street, where she claims the sexual assault occurred.
After the reported assault, Atkins accused the men of robbing her at gunpoint and threatening her life, said Scott. Atkins gave police detailed descriptions of the two males, saying they smelled like cigarette smoke.
Columbia Police have a different story. They say Atkins went to the home of a male co-worker. The man's girlfriend came to his house and attacked Atkins and her co-worker, causing Atkins' black eye.
Upon further investigation, officers figured out Atkins lied about the incident and tried to cover up what really occurred.
Scott says Atkins was arrested and charged Wednesday. She was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
