Denmark, SC (WACH)--Some state legislators gave back to two Bamberg County schools in desperate need.
Bamberg County State Representative Bakari Sellers, Barnwell State Representative Lonnie Hosey along with Orangeburg State Senator Brad Hutto personally delivered a $200,000 check to Denmark-Olar Middle School. They also gave a $250,000 check to Denmark Technical College.
The money was set aside from the legislature's last session. The money donated for the technical school will go toward improving old buildings on campus.
Denmark Technical College President Joann Boyd-Scotland said it can't come at a better time.
"We are a small campus. We operate with a very strategic budget. We do not have a lot of money. When we have a need, we really need to go to our legislature. The money is provided to all of the colleges has been cut significantly over the last five years."
Representative Sellers said the money helps not only the schools, but the local economy by keeping people here for potential jobs.
"When the country goes through a depression, it seems like poor rural South Carolina. If the country has a cold, we have pneumonia. what we are trying to do is make sure that we remedy that."
The money for Dunbar-Olar Middle School will go towards more after school tutoring programs and a computer lab upgrade.
