COLUMBIA (WACH)—The job market is tight, with some reports stating that the size of the American workforce at 1981 levels.  This, coupled with the unemployment rate above 8 percent, creates an extremely competitive field for people looking for work. 

Job readiness trainer Lori Cook, from the Richland County Public Library, says that one key is a change in mindset from job seeker to job getter.  According to Cook, the right education, training and skills can set you apart. 

Cook cites the use of assessment tools such as WorkKeys, which evaluate what skills you bring to the table, which can provide success in any occupation, and qualify you for a career readiness certificate.  

There are over 200 employers across South Carolina who recognize or require a WorkKeys assessment as part o the hiring process, says Cook, who also points out that in 2010, there were over 120,000 Palmetto State residents who would qualify. 

Cook says that there are several places in the Midlands that can provide tutorials and the assessment, including Midlands Tech, Work Ready SC and the Midlands Workforce Development Board.
