COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH / AP) -- The Department of Motor Vehicles is letting drivers go online to exchange license plates or replace lost, stolen or damaged plates.

Executive Director Kevin Shwedo says there are 84 different plates available through the new service.

"It couldn't be easier," said Shwedo. "Go to the website, pick your playte, pay for it and get it in the mail a few days later. You can do it all from the comfort of your own home, provided that your vehicle is already registered."

They include the regular South Carolina "sunrise" plate, as well as college and university plates and sports plates.

The online system is not available for first-time plates. Nor is it open to those who must show special documentation, such plates for military medal awards or membership in groups such as police officers.

Replacement plates must be the same design as those being replaced.

The cost of exchanging a plate can range from free to $70 depending on the plate. It costs $6 to replace a lost, stolen or damaged late.

The system accepts only VISA, MasterCard and Discover credit cards. Plates are shipped at no cost.
