Body found in woods identified

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WACH, AP) --  The Richland County coroner has identified the body of a person found in the woods north of Columbia Sunday morning.

According to the sheriff's department, two people stumbled upon the remains while clearing a path in a wooded area on Boswell Road near Fairfield Road off U.S. 321.

Coroner Gary Watts identified the body as 21-year-old James J. Shepard of Columbia.

Watts says Shepard died from complications of a gunshot wound to the head. The incident has been ruled a homicide.

The investigation is ongoing.
